About us

Specialized Hospital for rehabilitation and orthopedic prosthetics (former name The Institute of Prosthetics) is a specialized institution for prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation, one of its kind in the territory of Serbia and a scientific-educational basis of  the Medical faculty, Belgrade.

The Institute of Prosthetics was founded in 1954, taking hospitals for rehabilitation of war victims in USA as a model. Since then, the rehabilitation in the Institute has meant a team approach including: physicians specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation,  medical nurses, therapists (physical therapist, occupational therapist), defectologists,  psychologists, social workers, prosthetists/orthotists and the consultants.

The rehabilitation capacities of The Specialized Hospital consist of 3 rooms for kinesitherapy, electro therapy unit and occupational therapy unit. The production capacity of the Specialized Hospital includes a section for fabrication of temporary and definite prostheses and orthoses (a measuring room, lamination section, thermoplastics).

Medical staff of the Specialized Hospital includes 16 physicians specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, 1 physician specialist in internal medicine, 24 prosthetists / orthotists, 24 physical therapists, 32 medical nurses, 3 psychologists, 3 defectologists and 3 social workers.

Specialized Hospital follows world trends in prosthetic/orthotic fabrication. The members of the main prosthetic-orthotic team of the Specilaized Hospital are representatives in Board of Serbia of ISPO.

The Application unit functioned at the beginning as a smaller section for fabrication of temporary upper and lower limb prostheses and definite prostheses only for difficult cases. It was among the first in the world (1964) that started to use plastic masses for fabrication of prosthetic sockets. In the meantime, this Unit developed into a large unit for prosthetic fabrication, and during war-time and economic embargo it took on the largest burden in the country.

Implementation of the hospital information system is funded by the European Union through the EU-IHIS project.
